The area
Karlovy Vary and around
The house on Petřín Street stands in the spa quarter of Karlovy Vary, a few minutes above the colonnades. From the door you reach the springs in five minutes, climb through the forest to the Diana Lookout Tower, and drive to Loket Castle in about half an hour. On this page you will find ideas for what to do in Karlovy Vary and the surrounding area — from a morning walk to the Mill Colonnade to a winter day on Klínovec.

The spa centre and the colonnades
In the morning you leave the house, walk down to the river Teplá, and in about five minutes you are standing at the Mill Colonnade; it is 350 metres from the house. Spa guests walk here with a porcelain cup from spring to spring, and since the water from each outlet differs in temperature and taste, it is worth going down the whole row.
The Vřídlo hot spring and the Market Colonnade lie 500 metres from the house. On the way you pass spa houses, wafer shops and benches in the shade of the trees. In the evening the promenade falls quiet and the lamps come on — and home is a few minutes on foot. You do not need a car for any of it: anyone arriving by train gets off 250 to 350 metres from the house, at the Imperial stop. From the colonnade the house is minutes away, so you can go back for a coffee whenever you like and set out again.
Mill Colonnade — 350 m, about 5 minutes on foot
Vřídlo hot spring and its colonnade — 500 m
Market Colonnade — 500 m
Divadelní náměstí stop — 400 m
Imperial stop — 250 to 350 m

Views and walks above the town
Above the town spread the spa forests, with a network of waymarked paths. The Diana Lookout Tower is 2.1 kilometres away. You can walk up the switchbacks or take the funicular from the Grandhotel Pupp. From the gallery you see the town folded into its valley and, in clear weather, the ridges of the Ore Mountains.
A shorter loop leads through the forest to the Deer Spring, 1.1 kilometres from the house. The paths are surfaced and well marked, so you can walk the loop in an hour, before you have even made breakfast in the apartment. Dogs are welcome in the apartments by arrangement for a fee, so you can take them along.

Trips further afield
A surprising amount fits within twenty kilometres of the house. Loket Castle stands on a rock above the river Ohře 16 kilometres away, the Moser glassworks is 4.8 kilometres, and the Jan Becher Museum 2.1 kilometres. Each of them makes a half-day trip, and you can be back at the colonnade by evening.
Further south lies Bečov nad Teplou with the reliquary of St Maurus, and not far from it the mining town of Horní Slavkov in the Slavkov Forest — both under half an hour by car. Your car can stay in the garage by the house for CZK 500 a night (book the space separately, online or by phone) or in the private car park by prior arrangement, so there is no hunting for a space in the streets of the spa quarter. If you are flying in, Karlovy Vary airport is 3 kilometres away and Václav Havel Airport in Prague 106.
Jan Becher Museum — 2.1 km
Moser glassworks — 4.8 km
Loket Castle — 16 km, about half an hour by car

Winter and skiing
Klínovec, the highest peak of the Ore Mountains, is 30 kilometres from the house. Set off after breakfast, come back in the afternoon and make tea in the warmth of the apartment. The smaller resort of Plešivec above Abertamy is a similar drive away and suits a shorter day on the slopes.
There is plenty to do in winter even if you do not ski. Cross-country trails run along the ridges of the Ore Mountains, the spa forests above Diana can be walked in the snow, and the colonnades have a charm of their own on a frosty morning, when steam rises from the springs.
